Skimming is the process used for smoothing over a rough looking wall or ceiling in order to make ready for decorating.  Preparing walls and ceilings prior to plastering is extremely important as all the wallpaper, glue residue and flaking paint must be removed.

Plaster Skimming

Any damaged areas or holes should be fixed (see Lathe and Plaster / Plasterboard Patch and Repair) and once this is done, preparation is completed by applying two coats of strong PVA glue which acts as a bond to ensure the plaster stays on the wall.

Multi Finish is probably the most popular choice as a finishing plaster and is applied in two consecutive coats to a thickness of approximately 2mm – 3mm and then polished to complete.
