Skimming is the process used for smoothing over a rough looking wall or ceiling in order to make ready for decorating. Preparing walls and ceilings prior to plastering is extremely important as all the wallpaper, glue residue and flaking paint must be removed.
This type of plastering is mainly used in newly built houses and for refurbishments i.e. loft or kitchen extensions. It involves filling and smoothing only the joins and edges of the plasterboard and nail holes rather than skimming the entire area.
Artexing was a popular form of decorating used in the 1970’s/ 80’s but today, many people prefer to have the artex removed to achieve smooth walls and ceilings.
